2447. cloth vs. thread

Think of the difference between a thread and a piece of cloth. We tend to think of change as modifying a thread, changing a link or two in causal links in a chain. But the threads are so interconnected that any change tends to propagate tears in the cloth. Weaving a cloth is pretty easy to do but taking it apart much harder. Signing a contract or merging a business is much easier than stopping it. . How do we start a process of cutting fossil fuel use by 10% in the remainder of this decade? Any cut, say fuel for transportation, would propagate out to the whole of society. So we drop that approach in favor of… well, silence.
