Humans strive by growth. New methods, and conquests. Now growth is not toward thriving but has become a cancer that eats all and shits out organic and industrial waste that is more more than the earth can handle and still sustain life.
This is a new condition that will require deep changes in habits and culture and while some societies overpopulated their terrain, return to equilibrium , could always be achieved by more growth after reduction through wars or disease or local climate changes. Normalcy was the long range expectation along with the expectation that the earth itself did not change.
The current strategy of replacing the fossil fuel regime with hidden fossil fuel generating electricity or a clean energy regime that is out of reach because of cost, lack of materials, or too long a time frame is now understood as being out of range or impossible.
We must try a new set f habits and a new supporting culture. The rising curve of. temperature impinges of everyone. Do not ask for whom the bell tolls. This is a deeply discouraging but also challenging situation taking humanity in a new direction where success means less material and more culture .
