People are feeling the new weakness of the ties that bind, of the things that connect us to others. This is bad because it’s so frightening and just feels bad. It is good because looser connections mean that people are freeer, often felt as driven by necessity, to make new connections, which hopefully means the co-creation of better communities and institutions, families and personal reflections. Unfortunately, the drift of the two climates, social and physical are increasingly less supportive of such reconfigurations.
I remember reading once that in the New York Times in 1939 there were ads for cruise ships sailing in the Mediterranean. What cruise ship are we waiting for?
