Europe is hitting the brakes on gas guzzlers. The European Commission voted Tuesday to effectively ban the sale of new internal combustion engine cars by 2035. It also adopted what some climate advocates describe as a lax target for decarbonizing heavy trucks, asking for a 45% emissions cut by 2030. A more ambitious target for trucks wasn’t possible, policymakers said, because the technology is less developed than that of electric cars.
Cars sold in 2034 will stay on the road for about ten years. You don’t have to be a physician to diagnose this. But you do need to think.
