In the search for leverage to cope with global warming, we need to deal not with the symptoms, such as increase CO2 but with the cause: burning fossil fuel under the control of major energy corporations and supporting governments. Here is a solid lead.
People have levels of identity: a resident of Rome may define himself with varying degrees of intensity as a Roman, an Italian, a Catholic, a Christian, a European, a Westerner. The civilization to which he belongs is the broadest level of identification with which he intensely identifies. People can and do redefine their identities and, as a result, the composition and boundaries of civilizations change.

This suggests that we go after their identity more even than their pocketbook. My guess is that we need to challenge them (what on what used to be god's green earth do you think you are doing?) and embarrass them (You are worse in your geeed than the governing class that brought down Rome or the businesses that supported Hitler
