Society is approaching its understanding of climate change, both scientific and humanistic aspects. But neither fully enough to seriously engage the looming catastrophe.
Most pick-and-choose ideas, like solar panels, will provide all the electricity we need to match the contribution of fossil fuels but leave out the widely agreed-upon fact in the scientific community that society is failing. The websites and panel discussions are focused either on the long-term past 2050 or 2100 but not on the actual collapse already underway. The discussion is about what goals should be adopted but little on the details and means to realize those goals.. The state of society is becoming more aware of the facts; food, ice melting sea rise, droughts and floods, starvation, and heat deaths. Bureaucracies are delivering policies in the form of goals that keep society as it is but not proposals in the form of actual cuts that would require the closing of many institutions and the need to rethink how we meet basic needs. This brings us to bureaucracy which I will discuss in the next several posts.
