Humans are in the middle between the worlds of chaos and rigidity. Our activity carries us toward one or the other - but both are bad for us. Is there any possibility that our thinking might move meaningfully in such a world that leads to meaningful action in such a world? Can we stay in the middle? News from China this morning about temperatures ois hard to absorb.
We Must lobby as much as we can to as much power as we can access to create an international body with the power \and resources to create a new social, technical and economic tactical regime whose job it is to keep the titanic from sinking.
The problem with localized solutions and many experiments is that each tends to create activity that tries to be the solution to systems problems which in so doing creates more connections and use more energy rather than what is probably necessary: fewer connections and less energy. I don’t think we will get out of this dilemma but let’s try.
As a species we are up against ourselves. This was always potential in history but social structure was never large enough to encompass all of us leaving patches, like the United States economy after World War II, where it looked like progress could be onward and upward forever .
We are living several dead- simultaneously: population (not just ), exponential technologies of destruction, fossil fuel use with extraction of wealth from the land and from the people. The way out has to be systems integration with an intelligent use of the social structures of politics and economy and the emerging technologies which, currently, are more likely to be used for enhanced war then enhanced life. We must get past the idea that the future is an extension of the existing economy toward more profit. Draconian moves with very robust jettisoning are what we need.
