I don’t think we will do the following, but why not? In some societies, a funeral is a celebration. In Bali, I participated in a funeral where the body was carried to the burning site, and on the way the body was carried by a number of young men on a grid of logs and shaken along the way to get the dead vibrating and ready to rejoin the dance of the universe. Celebration.
We did not avoid the path taken spontaneously by all other species: thrive and multiply till we have eaten all our resources. We now have waited too long for anything else.
At major funerals, we celebrate the life well lived. Can we do that now with the lost species including the humans? This was a great ride, sad that it’s over, but a celebration of what we did is in order.
(A drawdown of carbon in the atmosphere creating the current blanket can’t happen because the surviving tech and institutions to do it will be beyond the competency and wealth of remaining humans and their communities.)
