I have written about this before. Weather reports are almost always incorporating language that gives the impression that the current event is not unique, but is part of a repeating pattern. Look at this example:
“The duration of this heat wave is notable and potentially the longest experienced in decades for some locations,” the National Weather Service wrote on social media on Sunday.
Why is this need to compare now with at least equally bad in the past? The implication for manipulating the mind of the reader is clear. Does it come about simply as a way to round out a news program? Amazing to me how people fall for this kind of language trap of which another example would be "net-zero". Obviously, a better news Story would say ‘While it is dangerously hot, unfortunately climate science strongly suggests that coming days will be hotter.”
