Grief can be a defense that prevents rethinking especially painful questions. Erich Fromm wrote EscapeFrom Freedom in 1939 explaining how powerfully we struggle, conveniently preventing us from rethinking, not about the world out there, but the world in us of our own core assumptions about that world.
