Need for belief, but from where?

The question can be put this way: can we come up with a belief system that is somewhat like a religion but that gets assent by 21st century thinkers ? A religion (re-ligiere, re-tie) that satisfies critical thought from most points of view, that integrates honesty, as in the best of science, with the best in feeling, integrity, and decency, for humans and nature? I get my own sense of meaning from that perspective. It is not something that comes from rock solid assumptions about what is given and fundamental, it is a[project that grows out of the choices we make. It is more like a ship than an island. More fragile, but it is what we have and can affirm in the spirit of adventure.
