On Tesla, and the optimism / Rhythmic whole implies harmony and balance. This is an example of engineering being too optimistic and not looking at the facts of social and political life. All our lives we have heard the promises of an engineering attitude. “Better living through chemistry”. I don’t think we should eliminate engineering, nor economics. But we should work to make them more realistic about the human social side of our actions. Cars and phones are great but were they worth 100 million violent deaths in the 20th Century?
That Tesla, one of the smartest, fell for this, shows how difficult the task will be. The fact that people such s Tim Cook, Bill Gates and Elon Musk are silent about politics and climate. (So far as I am aware. Cook has a twitter post on supply chains, but that is very narrow.) shows a mind more captured by business than by social logic.
