Stymied. Neither states nor governments nor individuals can do anything to stop the destructive momentum of climate-related problems. They (we) are all locked into organizations with rigid boundaries. I have argued that the place where leverage might be found is at the historical level - especially the movement through time of cultures and civilizations, which are large-scale events not bound by treaties, contracts, laws nor regulations.
There is some movement at this scale that might give us hope for large-scale change. Looking back. the change from Greece to Rome, from Rome to feudalism and feudalism to industrialization and industry with the Newtonian framework of mechanical cause and effect, and now on to the deeply radical culture of digitalization. When Princess Diana died the worldwide reaction, grown through her beauty and her roadside bomb campaign, set the atmosphere for the global wave of pathos, No marketing campaign could have achieved anything of similar scale. It was not the result of institutional initiative. A smaller but dynamically similar event is the rapid change in atmosphere that embraced Kamala Harris which went beyond any expectations of political consultants. The question is, of course, is there anything like this possible with climate change emerging in a new culture of modest living with a strong emphasis on relationships and aesthetics that would support a much lower energy culture?
in Bali about 30 years ago the provincial governor gave a speech, paraphrased, We are having a terrible problem with traffic accidents. In our culture paintings usually show very crowded situations with people, animals, ghosts, and plants with no space left over. We know how to handle crowds. Let's apply that to the way we deal with our traffic."
If we want to cope with climate we need an approach of requisite scale or we are merely paddling our canoe in the neighbors’ swimming pool. It is an open question which small-scale events, such as soil remediation, new organizations of young people or terrifically written books can support large-scale changes. The smaller-scale cultural movement I think has the most promise is the Arts and Crafts Movement in Englad with William Morris and John Ruskin related to Art Nouveau with its highly organic imagery in decoration. The movement lasted from the mid-1800s to WW1 which killed it off through the emergence of new interest in technology and mega-industry. Perhaps with climate change a return to agriculture nature and the arts is possible. There was a magazine, Arts and Crafts, with the motto, A democratic architecture for a democratic America. The craftsman aesthetic in design and architecture is sill attractive and many small towns in the US hva a number of Ars and Crfats houses sold by Sears and Rebuch through their catalog. with echos in the whole earth catalog, which is also suggestive of where could evolve.
I have a pretty good idea of the front-office thinking of Government-Left, witness 2021 and now, 2024, and how the masses can cause that to change
Thought I'd give a heads-up. 2 yrs ago I did a series of articles at VassarBushmills.com about state agencies interfering with mid-terms. Georgia was high among them, so I said ugly things about Gov Kemp and SecState Raffensperger. At the time, I was warning about the wider threat of state front-office interference with voter intent, which, as it turned out, proved to be true. I wrote 30 pieces (all short) found here,
https://www.vassarbushmills.com/2022/05/12/can-the-courts-run-with-the-2000-mules-findings/
and added a few more as some of the states (incl GOP-run) showed their true disposition.
Since Jan I've been under Dr's care, so never got to ask Donald Trump if he (or staff) was working with state's bureaucracies, and then I watched his speech to GA voters in Atlanta yesterday, where he delivered a long overdue arse-chewing on those same two GA execs.
So I decided to revisit the issue, thinking, maybe, it's not too late.
So, am hoping someone has a link to DLT? It would be appreciated.
Also, I have enough subject-texts to produce a 100+ pg book, zoning in on issues that effect top fllor mgmnt vs ground floor production, s my own experience run the gamut from corporate front office 1970s thru 1990, when the big corps went Gordon Gekko, alongside dozens of smaller knitting cut-sew, and general production types from SE Asia (Philippines, Japan, Korea, Thailand) to Soviet style Russia, UKR and Estonia, 1980s-early2000s)
By the time I retired and began to write, I was comfortable in virtually every setting, esp the "laws of generations" as they apply.
I wasn't sure if DLT was aware of their existence, but it was clear that just such a law caused the shut-down of Chernoble b/c the Gorbachev front office in '89 had no idea how to fix the inner workings there using 1970s staffing and mgmnt?
I'd like to share thoughts with someone
