I am thinking, after almost a year of travel in Montenegro and Malaysia, and now back in Northern California , that the vast majority of people argue with themselves something like this – we are doing OK now and do not know when this will stop, when we crash into the major impacts of climate change, if there are any. So best to keep on doing what we’re doing because change will disrupt everything, probably benefiting the rich in the medium term while hurting us right away.
This makes a very hard for any kind of leadership to mobilize people to any kind of alternative agenda.
(The discerning reader will note that there is a slow but steady progression of ideas and understandings about climate change, it’s causes, and what to do about it, if anything.)
