What to do.
OK, what to do. Problem solve.
What is the problem?
Tempertures continue rise with no ability now to say stop to fosil fuels. There is the good possibility that with all the interdpendencies, even a modest stopping of fossil fuel burning, the system would collapse all around all of us. there are many related problems, such as soil, food, oceans, poverty, robber barons now better called robber bums. Wealth without a conscience., A population in the global north that does not have skills of food, clothing, meds, machine repairs. (The book by Dartnell, The Knowledege, lays that out in stark images.) The south and rural living is better positioned than the urban north to survive, still having a sense of land and food.
The problem is how to survive with as much grace as possible. I am proposing that we need a complex strategy of Gardenworld for localized food, shelter and security with big tech for management. As things collapse old institutions will try to hold on, even to exploit, the emerging new situations. This will be (already is) a major struggle.
I hgihly recommend reading. Understand that human populations have been in collapse . Top of my lifst:
Joseph Tainter The Collapse of Complex Societies, thin and a quick read. Key is that complexity leads to system failure and elites own the infrastructure and take cash out rather than repair.
Arnold Toynbee The Study of History. Originally in seven volums reduced to one pretty good rendering available on Amazon and kindle.
Toynbee’s prose is elegant and relevant. For example he describes the many times in history elites faced restless internal and external proletariats. It gives, written in the 1940’s, a deeper understanding of the restlessness of the Trump supporters. Our empire is coming apart through larger forces than we imagine.
Treat the current moment with seriousness, even urgency. Read, talk, and my suggestion: write out what you think is going on and modify that daily as you learn new facts. It will keep you sane and even optimistic, and it has dignity to it.
New posts will mostly deal with problem solving, realizing that many problems have no solution but have to be lived through. But that can be purposeful and engaging. It is where we are.
