This should tell us that human society cannot, it seems, deal with the major facts that should be telling us about who we are, our capacity for good and bad, and what we need to work on. Those who can let the 20th-century flow past are telling us that future disasters - such as the now fully present climate change, will not have been dealt with. The problem is simple: we are not prepared to deal with narratives that do not lead to action now. The narrative that does touch on now is that profit lets us buy things. So we have individuals sucking off the economy but few taking responsibility for any bigger narrative.
